BPAL sniffing notes 30 - Krampus
Krampus - Anything BUT jolly! Draped with chains and bells, wielding both whip and rod, this rag-clad, horned, red-skinned, soot-covered leering creature is both the companion and the antithesis of rosy-cheeked and ebullient Kris Kringle. He is called by many names, and, in a myriad of cultures, he is seen with different robes and faces, but he is nevertheless always a sinister and fearsome instrument of Santa's wrath: he wields a switch on all irredeemably naughty children before tossing them into his large black sack and whisking them away.
Be good, or Krampus will toss you in a river! Sinister red musk, black leather, dusty rags, and wooden switches.
NOTE: I don't know which vintage this is - '06 or '07.
In the vial, I smell red musk, leather, and wood of some sort. Colorwise, I get a dusty brown-red.
Wet on my skin, there's an odd kind of sweetness. I'm thinking that's the red musk. Very unusual scent. I like it, so far.
10-15 minute drydown - At this point, it's mostly musk and leather. This is one of the few that my body hasn't immediately eaten the leather note.
1 hour drydown - It smells like incense. Good incense. The leather, predictably, has all but disappeared.

BPAL sniffing notes 29 - Enraged Bunny Musk
Enraged Bunny Musk - Extracted directly from the twitching nether-regions of the wild Eastertime bunny rabbit: a snarling, slavering, buck-toothed, fluffy, floppy-eared, horny-as-hell Springtime beast. Soft cotton blossom, white musk, baby's breath, clover and pale powder notes.
Inspired by Emzebel, by way of Heretic and Lycanthrope on the BPAL forum! This may be the Year of the Enraged Musks.
In the vial, it's musk and powder and cotton blossom. Very soft. Colorwise, I get powder blue.
Wet on my skin, musk and powder... Kinda reminds me of my grandma's vanity. :-)
10-15 minute drydown - I smell like old lady powder!!!
1 hour drydown - Huh. Baby's breath, musk, powder, cotton blossom... almost has a tiny bit of a lotus note or that sweetness. Not bad, but not me.

BPAL sniffing notes 28 - The Hessian of the Hollow
The Hessian of the Hollow - The dominant spirit, however, that haunts this enchanted region, and seems to be commander-in-chief of all the powers of the air, is the apparition of a figure on horseback without a head. It is said by some to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper, whose head had been carried away by a cannon-ball, in some nameless battle during the revolutionary war; and who is ever and anon seen by the country folk hurrying along in the gloom of night, as if on the wings of the wind. His haunts are not confined to the valley, but extend at times to the adjacent roads, and especially to the vicinity of a church at no great distance. Indeed, certain of the most authentic historians of those parts, who have been careful in collecting and collating the floating facts concerning this spectre, allege that the body of the trooper, having been buried in the church-yard, the ghost rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head; and that the rushing speed with which he sometimes passes along the Hollow, like a midnight blast, is owing to his being belated, and in a hurry to get back to the church-yard before daybreak.
Such is the general purport of this legendary superstition, which has furnished materials for many a wild story in that region of shadows; and the spectre is known, at all the country firesides, by the name of the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.
Grave moss and bone-white sandalwood, with vetiver, gunpowder, artillery shrapnel, and blood.
In the vial, I smell vetiver, sandalwood, and possibly patchouli. Very dark. Colorwise, I'm getting sable - the brown so dark it's easily mistaken for black.
Wet on my skin, it's sandalwood, vetiver, and a very odd, alcohol-y note - could be the 'gunpowder' and 'blood'.
10-15 minute drydown - Sandalwood and vetiver... that alcohol note is going away, thankfully. It was going to ruin a beautiful scent.
1 hour drydown - OMG, it's leather. *THIS* is what leather should smell like on me... I think I'm going to have to go on a search for this one.

BPAL sniffing notes 27 - The Churchyard
The Churchyard - The sequestered situation of this church seems always to have made it a favorite haunt of troubled spirits. It stands on a knoll, surrounded by locust-trees and lofty elms, from among which its decent whitewashed walls shine modestly forth, like Christian purity beaming through the shades of retirement. A gentle slope descends from it to a silver sheet of water, bordered by high trees, between which, peeps may be caught at the blue hills of the Hudson. To look upon its grass-grown yard, where the sunbeams seem to sleep so quietly, one would think that there at least the dead might rest in peace. On one side of the church extends a wide woody dell, along which raves a large brook among broken rocks and trunks of fallen trees. Over a deep black part of the stream, not far from the church, was formerly thrown a wooden bridge; the road that led to it, and the bridge itself, were thickly shaded by overhanging trees, which cast a gloom about it, even in the daytime; but occasioned a fearful darkness at night. This was one of the favorite haunts of the headless horseman; and the place where he was most frequently encountered.
Overgrown dark green bullrush, midnight roses, dwarf St. John's Wort, frankincense, blackberry leaf, and moss-covered, half-buried tree bark.
In the vial, it's frankincense, bullrushes, blackberry leaf, and tree bark... OMG I am in love.
Wet on my skin, it's all of the above and more... I get the faintest hint of rose, but not so much that it's overpowering. Unf. I need a bottle of this. Colorwise, I'm getting the faintest silvery green, like white sage or rosemary.
10-15 minute drydown - Mossy and just faintly sweet... I *need* to find a bottle of this somewhere. :-(
1 hour drydown - Very faint and mossy. It smells good, but I seem to have eaten it... May be the wrong time of month to be testing this. :-(

BPAL sniffing notes 26 - Whitechapel
Whitechapel - A gentlemen's blend, possessed of dignity, charm and refinement, but in truth masking a corrupted, hideous, soulless core. White musk, lime, lilac and citron.
In the vial, citron and lime dominate, with a touch of musk.
Wet on my skin, Why... hello, Lemonheads! Color - blinding lemon yellow
10-15 minute dry-down - Ok, the lilac and musk are starting to come out but the citrus is still dominating.
1 hour dry-down - Lilac and musk and lime, oh my! I quite like this one.

BPAL sniffing notes 25 - Sleipnir, Mason and Jenkin's Port Jelly, Helena
Sleipnir - At Yule, Odin leads a divine hunting party through the heavens. On Yule Eve, children would fill their boots with sugar, carrots, and straw and place them by the chimneys for Odin's eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, to eat. To repay the children's kindness, Odin would refill the children's boots with sweets or small gifts.
Confections spun of hazelnuts, honey, elderberries, and bilberries with a dusting of hay and a bit of carrot.
Erk. I smell nothing but hazelnut and sugar. Not for me. Color - hazelnut brown
****
Mason and Jenkin's Port Jelly - Red and sticky! From a genuine Old Salem recipe!
Eeep. Red Bull. Exactly like Red Bull. Color - artificial red
****
Helena - I'll follow thee and make a heaven of hell,
To die upon the hand I love so well.
Rose amber, calla lily, night-blooming jasmine, water lily, and white rose.
In the vial, rose and amber. Not so sure I want to try this one.... Colorwise, pinkish amber.
Wet on my skin, lily and rose. I can see this one being an epic fail very shortly.
10-15 minute dry-down - No. Just... No. Too much rose, too much lily. Had to try, though.

BPAL sniffing notes 24 - New Orleans, Athens, Blood Amber, Mother Shub's Spiced Lait au Chevre, Mother Shub's Toothsome Banketstaaf, Black Rose
New Orleans - Reminiscent of hothouse blooms on a humid night, ripe, but touched with decay. Sweet honeysuckle and jasmine with a hint of lemon and spice.
Pretty, but ugh, no thanks. Waaay too much for me. I don't smell jasmine and honeysuckle so much as magnolia blossom, for some reason. Colorwise, creamy white.
****
Athens - A reformulation and modernization of a true Classical Greek perfume, myrrhine: voluptuous myrrh, golden honey, red wine, and sweet flowers.
Smells like nothing but cheap red wine on me. Color - burgundy.
****
Blood Amber - Slivers of warm, pulsating blood forever crystallized in golden amber resin.
Nice, but I think it's a little simple for me. It's dragon's blood and amber and that's it. Color - amber red
****
Mother Shub's Spiced Lait au Chevre - Nothing warms the cockles like a mug of Mother Shub's egg nog! Goat's milk egg nog with coffee liqueur and spices imported from the Crimson Desert!
Nice in the vial, but on me - booze and sour milk. No, thank you. Color association is coffee with cream.
****
Mother Shub's Toothsome Banketstaaf - A treat sure to please even the most finicky cultist! Tubular pastries oozing with spijs, glazed with apricot jam, and dotted with glace cherries.
*gag* Butter pastry and boozy fruit. No, thank you. Color - golden brown.
****
Black Rose - Exquisitely melancholy. The background scent to an ancient exequies. Heavy, dark and floral: a blend of roses, with a touch of amber and musk.
*gag again* I have now established that roses do not like me. They amp to the point of drowning everything else out. Color, dried rose red.

BPAL sniffing notes 24 - Iron Phoenix
Iron Phoenix - Blood and fire: a magnetic metal that burns brightly and easily. Iron illustrates the metabolic process and the need to control primal, brutal urges without quelling the fire of passion.
Dragon's blood and dark, dense metal, black pepper, clove, red ginger, basil, and myrrh.
In the vial, I'm not sure what to think of this... All I can smell is dragon's blood and pepper. The jet black of wraught iron is definitely an appropriate color.
Wet on my skin, it's mostly dragon's blood with the myrrh to make it dark, rather than sweet. Not bad, so far.
10-15 minute dry-down - Oooh... there's the ginger and clove. I think I'm in love.
1 hour dry-down - Very subtle, once it dries down... It's a very warm scent. I think I'm going to have to order a bottle of this and maybe the Silver.

BPAL sniffing notes 23 - Quicksilver Phoenix and Silver Phoenix
Silver Phoenix - Lustrous, pliable, delicate, and malleable, silver is as mysterious and radiant as the moon. Silver requires darkness in order to react, and receives light passively.
Opalescent orris shimmering through a blend of mallow, moonflower, wild pear, iris, starwort, juniper, and mugwort.
In the vial, I get iris, orris, and juniper. Smells very clean. Silver is a very appropriate color.
Wet on my skin, wow. I'm not sure what notes I'm getting but I LOVE them. I think it's the moonflower, mallow, and wild pear. Guh.
10-15 minute dry-down - Sweet and musky and a little bit sharp and just... guh. I think the juniper is sharp enough to keep this from turning into old lady soap on me, which suits me just fine. On a side note, I don't know if it's just because my sinuses hate me, but it seems to have a painfully strong throw.
1 hour dry-down - Nummy. The sharpness has tapered off and now it's this beautifully soft musky goodness.
****
Quicksilver Phoenix - Mercury exists in three states of matter, just as Hermes, its patron, was the one deity that could move freely through the three classical worlds. In one of the alchemical processes, nitric acid, also called aqua fortis, is combined with Mercury, which then separates into a bed of red crystals and a cloud of red vapor. This experiment symbolizes the soul's transcendence over the polarities of mercy and severity, heaven and earth, light and darkness, life and death. Mercury is capable of forming complex compounds and amalgamating with elements that normally will not bind with others. Combined with phosphor and charged with electricity, it produces light.
Cinnabar and silvery liquid droplets of mastic, white sandalwood, elemi, and lavender.
In the vial, it's all lavender and mastic. I honestly don't think I've smelled a more 'masculine' scent in quite some time. Colorwise, quicksilver is very appropriate -shades of silver, purple, green, all there.
Wet on my skin, Holy Cologne, Batman! Man, I love my Death on a Pale Horse *because* of the lavender, but this is ridiculous!
10-15 minute dry-down - Ok, this is actually making me ill. Smells better on the boy than on me, though. Must wash off.

again, with the smellies
Ok, after trying a good 3 dozen or so scents, I've found a few favorites. I.e. - These are the ones I actually want a full bottle of, so far.
Death on a Pale Horse - omg. guh. I can't say much more than that. I <3<3<3 this one so much... This one is proof that I'm not allergic to *true* lavender - I adore the lavender in this one and it doesn't give me migraines.
Pet Magah Bird - A new favorite. Especially surprising because it's so foody. I think the frangipani balances everything so it doesn't just smell like a bag of jelly beans.
Worm Moon - Smells like a disused old carriage house, down to the decaying leaves and cracked flagstones. Nice.
Whitechapel - At first sniff, ugh. Lemon Pledge. After it dries, guh. Lilacky musk. *drool*
Mag Mell - Sweet and green and gold and exactly what I think those perfect photographs of a sun-drenched field of wheat would smell like.
Bastet - Egyptian musk, amber, and lotus! How could this go wrong? Thankfully, they temper the saffron enough that it doesn't smell like plastic on me.
Hecate - Sweet, but not foody sweet. Again, guh.
Tushnamatay - My first BPAL scent and still a favorite. Jasmine + sandalwood = drool. Very calming, but exotic at the same time.
Grandmother of Ghosts - Named after Mania, Mother of Madness, Roman Goddess of the Dead. It's creepy old lady perfume! To me it smells like mausoleum stones and dried flowers.

B&BW smellies
Twilight Woods - berry, mandarin, coconut, frangipani, mimosa, wet honeysuckle, apricot, oud wood, musk, orris, vanilla milk and warm woods.
Black Amethyst - Master perfumers have seductively layered a sophisticated blend of Italian bergamot and rare camellias with exotic sandalwood and a surprising twist of vetiver in this hypnotic fine fragrance, inspired by chic, sensual and confident women. Other fragrance notes include mandarin, tangerine, orange, waterfruits, crisp melon, lily of the valley, magnolia, sheer gardenia, tuberose, freesia, peony, patchouli, vanilla and musk.
Moonlight Path - Mysterious. Romantic. Alluring. To create this lush and romantic interpretation, our master perfumers have carefully blended the scent of lavender, roses and violets with purple orchid and mandarin leaf. Additional notes include bergamot, black currant, jasmine, lilac, lily, ylang ylang, heliotrope, soft powdery musks, amber, tonka bean, patchouli and vanilla.
These are the body washes I picked out at B&BW. Oddly enough, generally roses and violets make me gag but I love Moonlight Path. I think it's because the musks, amber, patchouli, jasmine, and ylang ylang temper those two so they're not so cloying.

BPAL sniffing notes 22 - Pet Magah Bird
Pet Magah Bird - Every kid wants a pet magah bird! A prism of scent, an explosion of multi-colored feathers: blood orange, black plum, sugar cane, guava, frangipani, coconut, pimento berry, violet, caramel, and pear.
In the vial, why, hello bubble gum! Fruit punch bubble gum, to be exact. Colorwise, I'm getting that obnoxious orange-pink.
